Inclusion Swimming Instructor Training Successfully Completed

In recent weeks, seven members of Water Rescue Munich, including two from the Lerchenau local group and five from the Unterhaching local group, have successfully completed the advanced training as inclusion swimming instructors at the German Swimming Instructors Association (Deutscher Schwimmlehrer Verband e.V.). This expands our team's competencies to support people with various physical or cognitive impairments even more effectively and sensitively when learning to swim. More information.

The training comprised an extensive theoretical component where we learned a great deal about the causes of various physical and cognitive disabilities, as well as the associated limitations. We focused particularly intensively on how these affect people in the water and what safety aspects need to be considered.

On the practical day, 19 children, young people and adults with very different impairments came along, and we went into the water together. We were having so much fun with games and activities that both the children and we lost track of time. We ended up with 2 hours of water time, always keeping an eye on safety and health. At the end of the day, children, parents, instructors and the aspiring inclusion swimming instructors looked back on many valuable experiences and touching moments. Everyone was incredibly proud of themselves.

Swimming is a life-saving skill that not only prevents accidents but also opens up new possibilities for movement and builds self-confidence. Especially for people with impairments, the water can be a place where they experience their body in a new way - lighter, freer and more unburdened. This special feeling of one's body in water not only strengthens self-confidence but can also have a positive effect on motor and emotional development.

We are in the process of building a corresponding programme. If you are interested, please get in touch with us.

Distribution of 267 Learn-to-Swim Bags to Kindergartens in Unterhaching and Neubiberg

The youth group of Wasserwacht Unterhaching and some parents earned 267 learn-to-swim bags through swimming at the 24-hour swim event organised by the Munich District Water Rescue.
The learn-to-swim bags were financed through donations and consist of a self-made swimming course booklet, a pool noodle and a rubber duck. The booklet is designed to support everyone who wants to teach a child to swim with targeted exercises.
With this initiative, Water Rescue contributes to introducing children to learning to swim at an early age.

"Swimming is more than just going to the pool."

It is not just about being in the water - but about being able to move safely and in a controlled manner. Swimming is a life-saving skill that not only prevents accidents but also opens up new possibilities for movement and builds self-confidence.
More about this campaign can be found on the Water Rescue Munich website: 1,000 learn-to-swim bags for nurseries in Munich and the district.

The Youth Group of Wasserwacht Unterhaching at the 24-Hour Swim

Learning to Swim and Saving Lives
Water Rescue is known for its rescue swimmers and water rescuers who save lives in emergencies - whether at a lake, on the Isar river, during disaster response operations, or at the public pool. But their work begins much earlier, namely in prevention. Because the most important goal is to prevent dangerous situations from occurring in the first place. Getting children accustomed to water, instilling in them the joy of swimming and ensuring that every child can swim safely is a goal of Wasserwacht Unterhaching.

24-Hour Swim at the Olympic Pool
How strongly this idea is put into practice was demonstrated by the 24-hour swim in October 2024 at the Olympic Swimming Hall. The Munich District Water Rescue organised the event, where lengths swum were converted into learn-to-swim bags for kindergartens. The bags contain child-friendly materials, exercise cards and practical tips. They offer parents guidance to playfully introduce their children to water and practise their first swimming movements.

A Night to Remember
The youth group of Wasserwacht Unterhaching and some parents participated with full energy. Both as helpers and as dedicated swimmers, and all on a voluntary basis. After closing to the public, the impressive Olympic swimming pool belonged entirely to us, the participating Water Rescue groups. Music was turned on, the underwater lighting created an atmospheric setting. Water Rescue provided snacks for new energy and good spirits. Some lay down briefly on the mattress camp set up in an adjoining room, others held out until morning, and so it was for some of the young people their first night spent with their friends.

In the end, we could look proudly at our achievement:
With 1,664 lengths of 50 metres = 83,200 metres - Unterhaching swam the most lengths of all participating groups. Our result: the Munich District Water Rescue presented 267 learn-to-swim bags.
At its core, however, the campaign was not about records.
