Information about the Swiftwater Rescuer
at Water Rescue
The swiftwater rescuer concept originally comes from the USA. There it was recognised early on that rescue swimmers were not sufficiently trained for flowing water. The training organisation "Rescue 3" began training in the USA in 1979 and since 1997, with the organisation "Rescue 3 International", has also been training so-called "Swiftwater Rescue Technicians" in Austria and Germany. Based on the SRT guidelines, the American National Fire Protection Association published "NFPA 1670", a type of safety regulation that describes operations in flowing water and is designed to protect rescuers. After the Elbe flooding in 2002, the need for swiftwater rescuers in Germany was also recognised. Since 2005, Water Rescue has therefore been training corresponding swiftwater rescuers based on the American "Swiftwater Rescue Technician" and "NFPA 1670" standards.
